NAUTICAL TRASH TALK
Long ago a warship sailed the Strait of Juan de Fuca with the following signal closed up at the yardarm during MINEX-87 with eight other mine sweepers. We were out there for a week streaming and recovering various mine sweeping rigs. If anybody ever actually bothered to look it up, nobody ever said anything and nobody important ever asked about it. I suppose we were under-socialized back then. We're older now.

POOR PITIFUL NEWSWEEK
Newsweek came to our attention again for the first time in a while. I was lulled to their site by a siren blogpost and found this upon my arrival there.
It looks like it was a rich piece of make believe reporting from 1995 about how the internet would never catch on but it's hard to tell given the depths to which the rag has sunk in the 21st century. I admire the chuzpah of the diseased NYC elite that imagine anybody at all would pay 25 cents more for a single issue than the entire magazine was worth when it was sold for $1.
I'm surprised it's still published. On the other hand, there is sometimes cheer to be had by watching the flailing of others particularly if they're progressives who know better than you.
Those interested in a subtle appreciation of the world wide web as nirvana may enjoy reading Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. In it, one of his characters 'dies' and his soul is broadcast into the Van Allen Belt.

THE HOOFBEATS OF AN AIR APOCALYPSE
The consequences of an unprovoked attack on an aircraft usually result in some fairly drastic changes to air operations. I don't think Turkey really gave it any thought when they shot down a Russian aircraft going about its business in Syria. The Russians know that the stateless enemy in Syria has no meaningful air force but now Russia has been forced into deploying weapons designed to destroy NATO stealth aircraft at ranges of up to 250 kilometers. It's a fascinating mobile air defense system complemented by a Russian Air Defense cruiser off the Turkish coast.
I would like to congratulate Turkey and all their friends at the Combined Air Ops Center on bringing about the deployment of a missile system that will haunt the rest of their days in Syria. Every single aircraft that flies in that part of the world can fully expect to have that beast's fire control radars lock on at maximum range and remain locked on for the duration. Every military aircraft equipped with a threat warning receiver is going to freak out when that happens and they will never know if there is a missile riding the beam heading their way until it gets there.*
The intensity goes way up at the 3 minute mark. These were F16s engaged by Russian export version air defense systems in Iraq back in 1991. Thanks to Turkey, Russia will deploy their most modern air defense systems to Syria and turn every single NATO sortie over eastern Turkey and Syria or the eastern Mediterranean into a thrill ride. Way to go Turkey!
*Yes, yes, we know. Beamriders are practically extinct and have been for decades but we're talking about Russia! Those little Russian land attack missiles last month were quite the surprise.

A FAILURE OF IMAGINATION
One of the most treasured remarks this week was from the morons at State who questioned us all about why Russia was fighting on Assad's team and destroying all of the armed rebels in Syria. The moron wondered that Putin and Russia couldn't see that by killing all the opposition to Assad they were, perforce, derailing any possibility of the morons at State putting together a kind of coalition government of all the warring parties to rule Syria after Assad is hung in a palace basement alongside his adoring wife and children.
So there I was, wondering, who on planet earth would be even more ill-suited to creating a post Assad government than Obama and the U.S. State Department, and, I couldn't think of anybody who could do a poorer or worse job. Srsly, the Moro Liberation Front in the Philippines could probably pick a more credible, honest and trustworthy ruling class for Syria than our experts will.
As you can see, my imagination has slipped its cage and gone awandering. And, so shall I. In the meantime, we'll keep our eye on the situation.

PHONED IN SELF PROMOTION
Every time I read things like this, "the big terrorist organizations were not excessively dependent on individual leaders and so could not be wiped out by decapitation strikes," I laugh aloud and wonder how many times the phone has rung at CENTCOM J2 and غبي الأحمق reports that the Dear Leader is going to be at his sister's house for a wedding reception on Thursday from 1400 to 1730 in case anybody wants to send a few Hellfire missiles over as a wedding present. غبي الأحمق never liked his sister anyway and he's number 3 in the organization and wants to be number 1.
UPDATE: The Terror High Command released a Policy Statement earlier today forbidding all future face to face strategy or planning meetings. All future meetings and cooperation will be conducted using Skype, Facetime or Hangouts. Authors reportedly, 'sick and tired of all the jumped up little narcisissi/crybully wanna-be future terrorist leaders who keep bringing bombs to the party.'
IDYLLIC SPOT
Winter is coming. In fact, it snowed here in MetroParkCentralis and it is darned cold. Naturally, my thoughts turned to a warmer place. Yes, the Hale Koa in Oahu is calling.
I've heard of the place for decades; ever since I first stayed at the Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul. A few months ago we were listening to a couple who were there with us. Neither had heard of the place even after spending 20 years with the Army. It caters to a very select clientele. Staying there is reserved for the nation's best.

NAZGULS GOTTA EAT
In a remarkable turn of events, Erdogan ordered his American made Air Force F-16s to shoot down a Russian fighter-bomber over Syria. The plucky Putin probably has a few teapots full of polonium and several cases of Bulgarian umbrellas stuffed into the next diplomatic pouch for the Russian embassy in Ankara. Assad suffered a minor injury when he laughed so hard he fell to the floor.
I have heard that we have some sort of treaty with Turkey that binds us to assist them in the event that they are attacked. I am sure that we can count on President Obama to give any calls from them asking for assistance the same due deliberation he has given every other weighty matter of state and take roughly as long as the Keystone Pipeline Decision or Surge II implementation took, given the risks involved. I'm equally sure that the U.S. Army will be willing to entrain the 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood and send them rushing to assist Turkey once they find their weapons, ammo, a few tanks and a reliable bit of train track connecting Fort Hood to Istanbul. The Army has given up on shipping Army Divisions by sea to Turkey for any reason involving national defense or war.
I'd have sent the ready 4th Infantry Division but Turkey has refused them entry so many times they gave up and mailed all their passports back to the State Department. They figure they'll aid Turkey when Hell freezes over and if you think we got global warming going on now, you should visitKurdistan Hell.
Anybody but OTAN would probably start to wonder if their so called "peace" dividend doesn't bear some resemblance to a check from Bernie Madoff. Sure sure, the peace is in the mail. Trust us.

BLUE ORIGINS
Color me impressed. As I read about McCain's response to United Launch Alliance's refusal to bid on putting defense satellites into orbit because they can't get an exemption from the requirement to use 'made in America' rocket engines, I suspect the opportunity Bezos saw in putting together his launch team years ago is about to pay off.
It's funny the article made no mention at all about the imbecility of putting U.S. Military Space Operations at risk every time we launch a satellite into space using a a defective Russian rocket engine. You'd think there'd be some thought put into actually surrendering all of our access to space and giving sole custody of orbit to Russia. Well, you would unless you were a complete imbecile.

Even if the Russian government does not cut off the supply to ULA of imported RD-180 engines, the US Congress, with emerging support from the Air Force, has come around to a view that it would not be advantageous to the US government to start up a US production line to produce the RD-180.
INTERNATIONAL KICK ME
It's like the Light-worker has a big sign taped to his back inviting everyone to kick him.
Mr 'Nothing to Fear About Terrorism' had this immediate response from his State Department.
The DOUBLETHINK
Wouldn't it be interesting if this 'warning' from the State Department dramatically reduced the numbers of Americans who travel abroad and resulted in a more inward looking insular American electorate that doesn't care about the rest of the world and really believes that everywhere is just like anywhere in the United States? You know, the kind of people who think the entire world has a right to freedom of speech and that everywhere is as secular and multi denominational as Albany, NY.
OTOH, how many Americans travel to Arabia or Pakistan or take a trip to India or Nepal or enjoy pub crawls in Transylvania?

SOCIALIST WORKERS PARADISE
Socialism appears to bring about sloth, decay, crime and a weakening in the strength of building material. It has many other flaws but one would think the visible accomplishments would force practitioners to consider the inevitable invisible flaws that follow from imposing social justice by fiat on people who can still get up and move away. It isn't like one has to guess what is going to happen next after nobody gets around to paying the workers and peasants.
They all moved away one day and never returned |
OBAMA KNOWS NO FEAR
He is a blustery fellow though, isn't he? He loves to talk down to us from the highest peak he can find and in this case he assures us that he has nothing to fear from any terrorist because, after all, he will never again in his life fly on a commercial airplane, stand in line at the boarding gate of any airport or draw breath without being surrounded by the SS who stand ready to jump in front of bullets for him. I suppose I'd be a little disappointed if a man so obtuse did know fear but I happen to believe he really is so blindly stupid that he believes that he and we are perfectly safe since, as he says, islam is a peaceful religion and all we have to do is try to look bigger and wave our hands vigorously in order to prevent terrorist attacks.
Did you catch that last bit of the headline? He just declared that his purpose and intent is genocide.
His Royal Highness, King Barak Speaks from the Throne and vigorously waves his hands |
CURSE THE ISLAMAPHOBES!
Isn't it odd though that the police everywhere in Europe know some addresses to go to with firepower and attitude after another islamic murder spree...
UPDATE: I saw this headline at the NY POST just now and thought they were finally going to arm their own subjects and citoyens against the vicious terrorists and killers. Ha! They're just going to send more guns and ammo to the vicious muslim terrorists and murderers in the middle east. Well done thou good and useless Public Servants!

SAY GOODNIGHT MR SLOAN
If asked what I think, I would say that writing this song encompassed his own destruction. Forgive me for using a rag like the New York Times as a source material. You'll note, if you read the obit scribbled by Bruce Weber, that he couldn't be bothered with boring details like date of birth, death, etc. Typical of the Times. You'll note he blathers on and on guessing where he was born. Again, typical for the paper of record.
It is interesting how often this song has been played since the events of 9/11. More so after the attack in Benghazi. It was a protest against an earlier war but the opening sequence call to mind our President's approach to the current wars in which we are engaged.

RETROGRADE ORBIT
The world appears to have settled into reverse for a bit and I'm trying to ignore it but it bleeds through everything. One literally cannot observe American news without boggling at the stupidity of Hillary Clinton and the concomitant reality that democrats will vote for her en masse because there is nobody else in the field that comes close. Still, this is over the top even for them, isn't it?
How lost to reality must one be to hold the position that muslims have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism? I've seen the numbers and they aren't good. A moderate muslim won't lift a finger to stop, hinder or protest the actions of the most fundamental muslim terrorist. That way lies death and they know it. It's always been that way. You thought Salman Rushdie unique because every muslim wants him dead for blasphemy? Think again. Many don't know or care about him but they won't support his right to flout the muslim law that demands he be killed on sight for blasphemy.
It's a bit like global warming hysteria. All of the most detailed and carefully measured data in the world HAS GOT TO BE MASSAGED by warmists in order to force it to correspond to the 'reality' they believe is imposed by their MODELS. That's not reality though. It doesn't even look that way and yet watching the major media and the democrats spin all this fakery is getting old. Like poor Mars, they don't even notice that they are going backward whilst shouting Progress!

A WITCH! A WITCH!!
The vicious little juvenile shits running around inciting racial violence and sparking gender and class hatred know what they are doing and I'm convinced that they do it because they think they can intimidate all of us. I reserve my greatest contempt for the Witchfinders.
Witchfinder Academia 33rd Class Ms. Click |
One of the nicer but lesser known aspects to the tragedy of mob violence is how often the instigators of the mobs get torn to pieces by the disillusioned mobs they created and led. Something to look forward to.
Witchfinding mob searching a Daycare Center for another witch |
The mobs can only be thrown off the scent by offering them fresh meat. The mob pictured above is searching out white girls that they can make cry who must surely be witches. Earlier, a slightly different mob composed of many of the same radicalized idiots were baying after young single men who had the temerity to breath the campus air without paying the jizzya demanded by the RAs, the Womyn's Special Study Group and the Campus Title IX Office of the Special Prevention of Campus Sex between Men and Women.

DAISED AND CONFUSED
Dictator-in-Waiting's assistant reports that the DIW is, well, let the record speak for itself.
Hillary's own personal assistant says that Hillary is OFTEN CONFUSED.
That's not a record for a successful run for President. I suppose one might think that Hillary could also be considered harmless because she naps a lot. I would point out that while the Secretary or Dictator is sleeping is when the mice studying to be rats go to work and push their agendas or slyly release little executive decrees into the wild.
If there is anything that her record shows at State it is an unbroken policy of hysteria and confusion leading to the complete immolation of any 'moderate' voices in islam.
This begs the question. Was everything Hillary has done based on informed decision-making and reasoning or was she just informed about what her principle deputies did in her absence?
LAUGHABLY RACISS
I watched a video now making the viral rounds of students sweeping into the library at Dartmouth shouting that only one particular shade of life matters. The shouters were of many races and at least two of the 97 possible sexes (it's hard to tell without the dime novel background story) and they abused the tolerance of people studying in the quiet environment that used to represent a quiet space where it was safe to study. The new klan are virulently intolerant. I don't like them. I dislike their stupid message and I disagree with their idiotic tactics.
I'm afraid I've reached a conclusion about both them and their message. About them, if they suddenly spontaneously combusted in my presence? I wouldn't piss on them. About their message, I don't think they're doing it right.
Do these lives matter? To who? To me? More than the lives of my family? More than the lives of my friends? More than civil society? More than life itself? I don't think so.
Does this tactic of breaking into my space and screaming at me prove effective in communicating the putative message? No. I dislike people who do that and by extension I dislike the people the message is putatively about. Did that help further the cause?
I think all life matters. I don't feel the need to go into the trenches to fight for it every single day or even part time. My belief is my belief and it may not correspond all that well with the beliefs of others but so long as they leave me alone, I'll leave them alone. When we conflict, I'm willing to talk about it and discuss it. I won't be shouted at.
I believe that anybody who is sincere about placing a value on life should guard it to the best of their ability. After all, if it has value in the world, somebody else wants it. The right to carry arms and exercise self defense should not be constrained absent justifiable cause such as mental illness, mental unfitness or poor shooting. Nobody could really argue that the mentally unfit should be kept disarmed as much as possible and I think anybody who has been shot and wounded while committing a felony should be denied his/her right to carry. We should expect better shooting from our citizens than leaving wounded felons lying around for collection.
I would expect a tremendous surge in the value of some life and a concurrent diminishment in the value of other life in the early days of such a policy but it would even out over time and all sentient armed life would quickly assume the same value. What could be wrong with that?

A CUNNING TRAP
I spotted this last night on the way out of the AMC theater at Courthouse where we watched Spectre. Fortunately, the movie had prepared us and while it was a very clever trap, it just wasn't clever enough.
The ladies enjoyed the movie although they declared that one dress was really ugly and an unfortunate choice. We all had to be convinced after long discussion. That was, apparently, one of the dress's flaws. It was too long. Ah well, we live and learn.

MINDLESS SECURITY
After reading about the terror attacks yesterday I was amazed to wake this morning and read in USA Today that the administrator of the Transportation Security Theater Troop was assuring America that not only were his goons on top of the threat posed by terrorists, they were rounding up christian extremists knew all about the airline terrorists workers laboring away in the bowels of our airport secure areas theft and diversion with terrorist ties and that nobody in all of the TSA gives a damn.
I don't have a warm fuzzy about that. It reeks of stupidity and incompetence.
The Transportation Security Administration, which repeatedly screens 2 million airport workers, didn't identify 73 workers potentially associated with terrorism, according to a watchdog report Monday.
"TSA acknowledged that these individuals were cleared for access to secure airport areas despite representing a potential transportation security threat," the 34-page report said.
In its formal reply to the report, TSA said it plans to check workers against the broader database by the end of the year. TSA also disputed missing potential threats in its vetting because the government doesn't provide the agency with all of its watch-list information.Sooooo, if I understand HLS and TSA, anybody can go on the NO FLY LIST forever for no explicable reason at all, yet the TSA doesn't screen out workers with known ties to terrorists and terrorist connections and keep them out of "secure areas" in our airports.
I don't have a warm fuzzy about that. It reeks of stupidity and incompetence.

IN MEMORIAM: PAX AMERICA 1945-2008
It was a very nice place, Europe, once. Why it seems to cycle from absolute bottom dead center of humanity to uplifted humanity and back again is beyond me. I'm looking forward to hearing that the news media and our President, State Department and TV pundits were all blindsided by the violence or the overnight rise of nationalist parties throughout Europe.
Hindsight is going to show who generated the massive waves of muslim migration and violence by systematically destroying all the reeds supporting peace in the Middle East; starting with Israel, then Mubarek in Egypt, our 'friend' Qadafi in Libya, the ruler of Yemen, and the red line that invited the dissolution of Syria when the "junior varsity" moved in and started destroying the Assad regime with nothing but approval from the U.S State Department and President Obama. We haven't even touched on Obama selling the atomic bomb to Persia.
Nobody on earth does violence the way that Europeans do. I think the world has forgotten that.

VERY SAD NEWS FROM FRANCE
In Occupied France it appears that the muslims have struck another blow for allah. It's a real shame but it is no surprise. It was, after all, just a matter of time.
Our Leader has a few words on ISIS.
Until Obama came along, I would have sworn that nobody could be consistently wrong about everything all the time. He was ably backed up by his French looking sidekick who loyally supported the president:
Our Leader has a few words on ISIS.
Does his elliptical eminence mean that we're going to nuke Damascus in the spirit of The Reign of Terror that ruled the First French Republic? Because, yeah, that's going to work... Still, it looks like the King of Ignorance has finally come close to meaning the message he meant to say. This time the muslims really did carry out attacks on random French citizens. Not at all like those "random" attacks they carried out at Charlie Hebdo and a kosher deli in Paris earlier this year before French Premier Valls declared that France is in a “war against terrorism, against jihadism, against radical Islamism, against everything that is intended to break fraternity, liberty, solidarity,” Unfortunately, France has a really ugly track record when it comes to war since the death of Napoleon.
My advice remains unchanged, "You Better Arm Yourself."

NO MILITARY EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
The Washington Examiner was 'reporting' on the news today and deliberately injected this at the end of its hit piece on presidential candidate Lindsey Graham:
It seems that the Washington Examiner failed to notice that most of the United States National Guard and Reserve have been mobilized and deployed during the War on Terror. Navy Coastal Warfare started the war with no active duty counterparts and 8 years later our commissioned reserve units were beginning their fourth mobilization cycle with 7-9 month long rotations to the Middle East. I left active duty in 2009. By then, the NCW Force had been augmented by over a thousand active duty Navy Coastal and Maritime Security sailors in the Maritime Security Forces who, ever so slowly, started to deploy to the Middle East and Europe. The reserve squadrons and detachments continue to deploy to the Middle East to this day under their latest name.

This was basically what Inshore Undersea Warfare looked like when I joined it in '89 THIS IS WHAT IT MORPHED INTO DURING THE WAR ON TERROR |
I enjoyed my years with Inshore Undersea Warfare, Navy Coastal Warfare and the Maritime Expeditionary Security Force. Each version of us did exactly the same things very differently, but each version was professional. I was sorry to see the core force and structure demolished by NECC but it was expected after just five minutes listening to the first COMNECC. You can't shatter an empire without breaking a few eggs.
The student newspaper known as the Washington Examiner could use some military experience on its staff. Knowing the media, they'll pick folks like Manning, Whitworth, Walker and Bergdahl. They might understand the nature of the total force consisting of the active forces, guard and reserve.
YALE CODE OMEGA
We thought this might be apropos given all the shameful happenings at Yale this week. Nobody could have seen it coming.
Well, I guess they didn't cover up as well as they thought. It looks like plenty of people recognized the subtle 'je ne sais quoi' of a Yale man.

THE ONGOING COST OF SOCIALISM
From Last of the Few
Left and Lefter...................from Rico
Normal folk don't need to be told what the career politicians not only haven't figured out yet, but haven't a glimmer of a clue:
- Failed leftist policies that haven't worked for 100 years, that don't work today, and won't work tomorrow.....are rejected by voters.
So the Democrats (C) continue to move even farther to the Left, despite the GOOD news that since Dear Reader Barry took orifice in 2009, Democrats (C) have LOST:
- 13 US Senate seats
- 69 US House seats
- 12 State Governorships
- 36 State Chambers
- 900 State Legislator seats
Doubling-down on clueless, they are now trying to decide between Comrade Hillary and Comrade Bernie.
- It's like arguing which is better, the Mensheviks or the Bolsheviks?
The BAD news is that the Republicans of the GOPe* are not one bit better, or that much different, from their Democrat (C) counterparts. They're just not as far Left. Yet.
- They have broken every election promise made and shanked every supporting
Republican voter.
They are ALL useless twats, both D (C) and R (D).
- It's like arguing which is better, the Bloods or the Crips?
*GOPe stands for the current "GOP establishment."
THE SILVER SHOOTER
It is so very rare for a reporter to crouch on a crime scene in midtown Manhattan, well known for its total devotion to privacy and complete absence of any kind of video cameras, and announce with such perfect grace that the police who responded to 3 people being shot at McDonalds, are pursuing a silver car as the shooter. No other salient details are known at this time, to anybody.
The car's status as an autonomous killing machine that seeks out prey in midtown Manhattan was unquestioned and unremarkable. Apparently, cars killing people over arguments in restaurants is not all that uncommon in New York. Thank God New York has limited gun purchases to silver automobiles.
I am not going to another McDonalds unless it is on base or behind security at an airport somewhere. That place just reeks of madness.

MIZZOU AND YALE SUPPRESS COUNTERREVOLUTIONARIES
Do you also get the sense that higher education these days deserves itself? Watching the contemptible fracas at both Missouri State and Yale is sickening but, fortunately, we don't watch the news. There are some people who must question how the college campus reached the poor state it seems to enjoy in so many states. It must also be obvious to the observant how it made it to its current nadir.
Nadir is an interesting word. It defines the lowest point. About the only place I used to run across it was in celestial navigation and even then, we didn't much care for the lowest point, we were looking for the sun's or moon's zenith. Some colleges and universities are still on a downward spiral in search of their nadir. They self-programmed for nadir seeking behavior a long time ago.
They built intolerance and stupidity on a solid liberal foundation of contempt for western society, western history, western philosophy and they let the lunatics in the College of Arts and Sciences run the asylums. They live on the continued myth that a man needs a college degree to get ahead and will accept a 4 year indoctrination into social justice mores in lieu of an actual college academic experience that expands the mind, increases knowledge and advances the social frontiers. The students are not getting that at every former center for academic learning.
It looks like men have figured that out and college admissions of young men have shrunk dramatically. I don't know what motivates the rest to continue to go unless they are motivated to get degrees from the College of Engineering. If they're truly clever they might restrict their dating to other students from the school of engineering and begin carving out a life free of the annoyance of the monstrous demands of the social justice crowd.
I did watch the two videos of the Yale Self-Criticism and Extended Verbal Torture of one of its professors who had the unmitigated gall to support the words his wife committed to paper on the merits of letting young people be a little outrageously dressed on Halloween and its counterpart video of a student videographer being assailed by a Professor of Harpy Studies at Mizzou who demanded he leave and told him he had no right to be there and went further to demand that bigger, beefier, dumber people throw him out.
For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up. And so they are.

ANYBODY SEEN OUR LITTLE CLOCKMAKER
As I looked at the cartoon posted from Last of the Few I wondered, 'what happened to our little muslim clock maker after he left the White House last month? Did he head for Egypt enroute to Qatar and take a vacation at a Red Sea resort where one of his clever little clocks might have gone astray?
Never gonna fly to Egypt again |

PIZZA AND AMMO
We got an announcement today from a pizza place we ate at on our drive back home from San Diego. It was the first I received from them in almost a year. They're not exactly beating the drum. It was though, excellent wood fired pizza and the atmosphere was friendly and inviting so we recommend it.
The place is also across the street from a Walmart that seemed to contain all the guns and ammo in Christendom. That may be no big draw for some, but living here in MetroParkCentralis and coming from San Diego, guns were scarce and ammo was even more conspicuously not available at either end. If I hadn't loaded up with ammo at the Post Exchange at Fort Riley that morning, I'd have squeezed in some more .45 ammo.
WHITHER THE GREAT SCOTTISH HAGGIS HUNT
Will there be a Great Scottish Haggis Hunt this year? The world wonders. We missed it last year because they were looking for a new host that can handle 8 million page hits.
EUROPE ABLAZE, AGAIN
Having buried Germany up to its waste in gasoline, Führer Angela Merkel asks, "is there nobody who will light a match for Germany?"
UPDATE: 11/13/2015 It looks like they threw the first match into Paris. Sadly, it is just the first from the second box of matches and there are plenty more where that came from. C'est domage. Quelle pitie.

A NIGHT FOR DOVER BEACH
Dover Beach
The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Ægean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth’s shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.
It is almost impossible to read the news anymore.
