FOOD AND NUTRITION

Interesting developments that I missed. I'm not much of food science guy so it was never a staple of my reading. There's an interesting book review about a book written by a vegan/vegetarian who fell off the wagon recently and wrote an in-depth book about the diets of people.  The quote below was taken from the comments section between Rob and Paleo Huntress and is part of her response to his arguments about Okinawa diet featuring carbohydrates.
“A point worth making is that people die for other reasons than health. For example, people die because of car accidents and violent crime. A few years back, Robert Ohsfeldt of Texas A&M and John Schneider of the University of Iowa asked the obvious question: what happens if you remove deaths from fatal injuries from the life expectancy tables? Among the 29 members of the OECD, the U.S. vaults from 19th place to…you guessed it…first. Japan, on the same adjustment, drops from first to ninth.”
Earlier, The Clinical Nutritionist chimed and set the record straight with this gem:
Ok here is your proof. As a matter of fact there is NO proof from a bio-chemical standpoint that we require carbohydrates at all, but we do, however, REQUIRE essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat.
“Essential” means that your body can not make it. You must get it from your food. There is NO SUCH THING as essential carbohydrates.
Yes, yes, I'm sure these things were well known to my astute readers but I haven't seen either of them anywhere else before this. I mean this is truly dangerous knowledge. You wouldn't want your minor children finding out that there is no dietary excuse for strained carrots or any vegetable once it is known to them that there really is no valid reason to eat them.

SHARING ISN'T THE LOADED WORD I'D USE

In the latest update from the front, Oriana Pawlyck of the Air Force Times writes:
The Air Force and coalition partners in the air war against the Islamic State are not only sharing intelligence, runways and strategic plans, they’re also sharing bombs.
Coalition jets having been taking from the U.S. stockpiles as needed, said Lt. Gen. John Raymond, deputy chief of staff for operations at Headquarters Air Force. “We do have relationships with our coalition partners for those supplies; they are using those weapons as well,” Raymond told reporters Thursday at a defense writer’s briefing in Washington, D.C.
While the Air Force is not immediately concerned with depleting its stockpiles, “it is something we are managing very closely to make sure … we have the supplies to do what we need to do today,” he said.
The words I'd have used in writing such an article would be, "USAF Gives Away Arsenal of Bombs," or "Ruthless Allies Steal USAF Blind and Take Bombs Whenever."

Can you remember ANY time that one of our allies "shared" ammunition with us? I honestly can't.

Just reading that twit general's words is irritating to me. We once used a broken down K-loader in Qatar after we fixed it up and made it operational enough to actually move to the aircraft and when the Air Force found out they turned around and charged us $17,000 for using it. There were no Air Force people there, the equipment had been abandoned at the airhead and we spent our money fixing it up. It's extremely irritating to read now that the USAF is just giving away $121,000 bombs because it can't find enough aircraft to drop them on our enemy.

HAVE THEY CONSIDERED SAILS?

The USN, in a bid to prove itself totally irrelevant, has just deployed an entire battle group propelled using only bio-diesel fuel. It's actually an unusually good price for fuel at $2.05/gal but, I strongly suspect that an update will show that someone misplaced a decimal point. In any event, I expect many more 'mechanical breakdowns' as high-end fuel injectors try, and fail, to inject french fries into diesel engines.

Every time I think that Mabus cannot be a bigger idiot, I am struck anew by his dogged persistence in setting the lowest possible bar for stupidity and pig-headedness. If the Army was run by an idiot of his calibre, it would implement an aggressive new strategy for cutting costs by fielding sepoy armies and bringing back the bow because--reusable unleaded ammo.

Nicely armed Marines Storm Ashore from Newest USN Amphibious Ship!

We can only hope that Mabus never sees this one or he'd surely throw $42 billion at Northrop Grumman and demand two of them to serve as "scouting platforms" for the fleet. For a few billion more, Northrop Grumman would endeavor to deliver a drone version.

PIZZA AND AMMO

We got an announcement today from a pizza place we ate at on our drive back home from San Diego. It was the first I received from them in almost a year. They're not exactly beating the drum. It was though, excellent wood fired pizza and the atmosphere was friendly and inviting so we recommend it.

The place is also across the street from a Walmart that seemed to contain all the guns and ammo in Christendom. That may be no big draw for some, but living here in MetroParkCentralis and coming from San Diego, guns were scarce and ammo was even more conspicuously not available at either end. If I hadn't loaded up with ammo at the Post Exchange at Fort Riley that morning, I'd have squeezed in some more .45 ammo.
