The problem I have long had with people who propose that we should wage economic warfare against countries that we are not altogether happy with, is that it is a form of warfare. I know, you'd never guess that from the title but there it is. It really shouldn't be a surprise when Russia retaliates in kind. The thing about war that escapes politicians is that once you embark on a course of war, it escapes. It consumes and grows and gets out of control. One really shouldn't allow an idiot to talk about imposing economic sanctions on a foreign country unless that idiot is referring to some banana republic.

Yeah, as if the Japanese were just going to sit still and take FDRs oil and scrap-metal embargo..
It's almost like the people don't see the consequences of pushing a major power over a meaningless non-issue. Why would anybody think it was a good idea to do that with Russia? It gives Putin a chance to show China that Russia may not be what it was but it is still quite powerful enough to play rough on its own turf.
