ANOTHER TYPICALLY MODEST DEFIANT PROPOSAL
All those Syrian migrants that President Obama wants to bring over in order to enhance our security by importing a better breed of peaceful muslim could be easily accommodated in world class beach resort facilities at Guantanamo Bay. I'm sure they'll fit right into the President's Socialist Paradise and that way everybody will be happy. If Cuba is good enough for the Mayor of Chicago and his family, it has to be good enough for Obama and the muslim army headed this way across the Atlantic. If we give the JV ISIS from Syria a few bucks I'm pretty sure we could arrange with Castro to have them turned loose in Havana.

BLANDLY STUPIDLY OBTUSE AND IN CHARGE
We are all used to elected officials of surpassing stupidity who nevertheless thrust themselves into the limelight to throw their idiocy and ignorance into the harshest glare of public self-shaming. Here's a new one. This one wears a uniform.
Isn't it fascinating that a navy captain is the Voice of Quality Assurance and can tell the Russians that they don't need to defend their aircraft from other aircraft in the ongoing spat over Syria. Evidently, the captain suffered through one too many Deming TQL/TQM sessions and fixated on productivity to the exclusion of results and accomplishment, high on the list of which, in war, would be surviving the engagement.
I like that the missile deployment hasn't had any impact on American operations over Syria though. That's a good touch. So far as it can be determined American operations over Syria haven't had any measurable effect on ISIS so things are balanced with total futility on our side and a cold-eyed assassin's approach to killing its enemies on Russia's side.
You know, we haven't even started to discuss the eventual "unexpected discovery" of Stinger missiles in ISIS inventories. "How'd those little suckers get there," mused Pentagon Spokesman, Captain Jeff Davis. I mean, you just know that if our FBI and ATF couldn't resist selling guns and ammo to the Mexican drug cartels, their military and intelligence agency counterparts will be unable to refuse to give away surface to air missiles to ISIS.
On that note, I see this morning that Robert Crumplar has a new essay; How Offering Tomahawks for Foreign Military Sales Will Strengthen Allies and Deter Adversaries. Idiocy isn't confined to Turkey and the Pentagon. It's everywhere.
A Pentagon spokesman expressed concern about the surface-to-air missiles and other aerial targeting weaponry because it suggests the Russians are rejecting a call from American officials to focus on targeting the Islamic State group, also known as ISIL or Daesh.
“Certainly we are aware of what they’re putting in there ... it’s a capability that we don’t see as being productive in the fight against ISIL,” Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, the Pentagon spokesman, told reporters Monday.
“Whether it’s putting air-to-air missiles on planes or putting in surface-to-air missiles, those are things that are clearly not about ISIL, as ISIL doesn’t have any aircraft,” Davis said. “So far it has not had any impact on our operations [over Syria] but it's certainly something we're aware of, particularly with the surface-to-air missiles."I don't know why this idiot is surprised that Russia is 'rejecting a call from American officials to focus on targeting our friends in ISIS.' To paraphrase the captain, I wonder why the Russians don't view themselves as the selfless myrmidons of the Greater EU like we do and simply do as they're told by their betters, Dammit!

THE HORROR, THE HORROR
Oh fisk this.
Anybody can fisk.
REUTERS/SUZANNE PLUNKETT
Russia is engaged in "classic asymmetric warfare" in Syria by using its military clout to prop up President Bashar al-Assad while saying it is attacking Islamic State militants, Britain's foreign minister said on Sunday. The actual goal of warfare is to kill and destroy one's enemies. That's why warriors actively seek to outnumber the enemy or surprise him and then kill and destroy. Most foreign ministers know that sort of thing. Usually, once enough have been killed people start to talk about opening diplomatic channels and negotiating. But, not usually until then.
Russia last week began striking targets in Syria - a dramatic escalation of foreign involvement in the civil war which has been criticized by the West as an attempt to prop up Assad, rather than its purported aim of attacking Islamic State. The US, NATO, Turkey, et al are all bombing and shooting ISIS so just what got escalated when the Russians joined in?
"It looks like a classic bit of Russian asymmetric warfare - you have a strong propaganda message that says you're doing one thing while in fact you are doing something completely different and when challenged you just flatly deny it," Philip Hammond told Reuters in an interview in Manchester. The Russians are very direct. They never had any of that wafflie 'indirect approach' nonsense. ISIS is both Russia's enemy and Assad's enemy and they get goodies if they help out Assad and benefit themselves from killing ISIS. It's a real no-brainer.
He said Britain had held discussions with Russia but kept on getting the same response - that Moscow was attacking Islamic State militants in Syria. I'll bet the Russians remember years of begging Britain to open a second front on the Atlantic coast to reduce the nazi pressure to kill every living Russian.
"You try talking to the Russians," he said. "They just keep repeating their position – that is by the way also the Iranian position – and it is just incredible." Is this dolt's father the prime minister? Is that how he got the job as foreign minister?
He said that Britain needed "absolute clarity" that Assad would not be part of Syria's future and rubbished proposals put forward by Russia and Iran for elections as a means to end the conflict. What a pity he doesn't bring that same demand for action and clarity to the issues affecting the EU and Britain's referendum.
Hammond said Syria was "a million miles away" from being able to hold a free and fair vote. Does this guy think he's Woodrow Wilson? Where does he stand on Palestinian elections or Ukrainian elections? Say, why isn't he bleating about Russian attacks in Ukraine?
"In a country where 250,000 people have been killed and 12 million people have been displaced, half of them outside the country – how can you talk about free and fair elections?" he said. So that's how Labor defeated Churchill in July of 1945!
ASSAD END GAME?
Hammond said the key to ending the suffering caused by the four-year civil war was a managed transition to peace - even if it meant Assad retained power temporarily. Just 3 paragraphs above this idiot said that Assad would not be part of Syria's future and rubbished Russian proposals for elections.
"If the price for doing that is that we have to accept that Assad will remain as titular head of state for period of time, do I really care if that's three days, three weeks, three years or even longer? I don't think I do," he said. His problem, which Reuters is blind to but Assad and Russia are not, is simply that nobody at all believes a word uttered by any UK or US diplomat or minister since they have the ugly truth about what happens next. They can look at dead Sadat, imprisoned Mubarek and equally imprisoned Morsi and dead Shah and dead Qadafi and ex-Yugoslavia and the unhappy Iraq and Afghanistan and know that no American or British word on anything can be trusted. Toppled dictators are so much dead meat to the English speaking world. The Frogs love them.
But Hammond said that for such a transition, Assad should make a pledge not to run in any future election and that he would give up control over Syria's security apparatus. Isn't this the same chump that crowed about the Assad agreement to give up all his WMD years ago and 'discovering' just a few months ago that they lying bastard didn't actually surrender all of his chemical weapons after all? He'd still accept Assad's word though on a simple matter of life and death. Assad knows that if he leaves power he'll be dragged to the Hague and tried as a criminal in a heartbeat that lasts 50 years.
He added that there was no agreement with Moscow and Tehran on such a transition. Just now still not realizing that the Russian and the mullahs have a totally different agenda that doesn't include any kind of 'agreement' about Syria.
"The key is that there must be a transition – at the moment there is no agreement with the Russians and the Iranians even that there should be a transition," he said.
Hammond also said Russia represented a threat to the international system upon which Britain's security depended, saying it had shown that it did not respect diplomatic norms. This idiot is so used to schooling putrid little losers like Clinton and Kerry that he hasn't yet grasped that he is dealing with real statesmen who know very well how to play the Great Game.
He pointed to Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region last year as an example of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin's approach to international law. But Hammond is utterly determined to learn nothing from previous behavior. Nothing! He is still outraged that Russia isn't playing by his rules.
But, he said that Moscow still had an important role to play in the Middle East and that Britain could not afford to ignore Russia's role in negotiating peace in Syria. Russia is not negotiating any peace. It is going to exterminate its/Assad's enemies until they run away or die trying.
"It would not be in our own interests to say that we will not talk to the Russians about the situation in Syria because we object so strongly to what they are doing in Ukraine," he said. Having proven to be total and complete pussies over Ukraine, no real player is going to pay any attention at all to your pathetic little bleatings.
"We have to compartmentalize these disputes," calling for Russia to re-engage with the international system. "We're getting our asses handed to us on that front so we're going to stick our head way up our ass and pretend it doesn't exist while we sally forth to get our ass kicked even harder in this other current unpleasantness. We cannot do things at the same time you know!
"We just need a Russia that accepts there are rules in the system, and you can't throw your toys out of the pram and resort to military force every time you don't get your way," he said. WTF!? and why can't they resort to military force when you and all the rest of continental NATO have conclusively shown that you cannot and will not resort to force because all of you have disarmed so totally that you couldn't put two fighter squadrons over Syria if your lives depended on it.
And seriously, the minister said they tossed their toys out of the pram?

HILLARY CLINTON MUST GO TO JAIL
Those familiar with the history of World War II and the code breaking era know of the extraordinary damage the allies were able to wreak on our enemies because we read their top secret messages because we were able to break the Enigma and Purple Codes (and a host of others). We were able to predict the Japanese attack on Midway and position what remained of our Pacific Fleet in a position to destroy the Japanese Navy's aircraft carriers and end the Japanese onslaught and begin turning the war into a string of never-ending defeats for Japan.
Hillary and her enablers in the State Department put us in the position of the Japanese and the Germans by giving away our top secret positions on every single matter of diplomacy and war that fell under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. Those people need to go to jail.
People (albeit dim witted people) wonder how Putin was able to pull off such masterful accomplishments as stealing Crimea back from Ukraine, aiding Syria in pulling off the Syrian chemical weapons scam that bamboozled the ignorant because he knew that Barack was only lying when he talked about a red line and invading Ukraine with impunity and complete assurance because he knew that diplomatically and presidentially nothing would happen to him as a result of invading a foreign sovereign government's country. How did he know all this? He read it in Hillary Clinton's damned email because the Russians had every scrap of data off her server in real time.
People who have no idea how National Security Information works may wonder at the vehemence of those who do know at the calamity that Hillary initiated because she broke the law. Charlie Martin gives an expert and easy to follow example of just what had to happen in order for Top Secret SCI information to get onto Hillary's home server and servers in a bathroom closet in Denver in Hillary's Air Gap Problem.
Hillary Clinton and her aides and even 'real diplomats' who sent Top Secret information to Hillary at her .com address need to go to jail. People who break those laws must be sentenced to prison and not receive presidential pardons if the law is to have any meaning and encourage people to obey the law. Scooter Libby was sentenced to prison for far less and people like Pollard and Manning will spend decades in prison for violating the same exact law.
I've always known that Hillary Clinton was scum but this time she cannot evade responsibility for her actions and neither should any of those who sent her TS SCI information at her email address. There was NO WAY that this could have happened by accident. No way in the world could it happen by accident. Some idiot installer may stupidly and inadvertently connect a SIPRNET server to a NIPRNET connection but there is no way that can happen with this level of information. Somebody pulled it off a stand-alone terminal, stripped the headers and footers and the paragraph markings and knowingly communicated it to an unclassified unprotected server.
Consider all the damage we were able to do to our enemies throughout World War II and much of the Cold War because we could read their diplomatic and military coded messages and communications. There were a lot of times when we weren't bluffing at all because we knew what our enemies would accept if push came to shove and our President and his staff knew they could get away with forcing the enemy that far, if no further. Hillary put us in that position but this time it was our enemies who knew what are diplomatic bottom line was better than anybody on the planet because they read her mail and it included the President's stance on any given topic under active consideration at the State Department.
I'm going to wait patiently for somebody to now leap out of the woodwork and exclaim that "Hillary was a Stalking Horse and she was DELIBERATELY feeding misinformation to our enemies by engaging in this private home based server email system!" She was being used by the Intel Community in a deliberate plan for deceiving our enemies. Wait for it, it will happen soon. Never mind that it seems to have always worked in favor of damaging our national security our credibility and world peace.

FECKLESS AND FAITHLESS
The latest move of sheer madness to come out of the White House is a plan to deploy an armored brigade to the Baltic. The White House has obviously given a lot of thought to this move because there could hardly be a more provocative and fatal international move other than blockading China's continued construction and development of the various rocks and islets it has seized in the China Sea; each of which gives China another 200 mile radius economic exclusion zone and full control of the sea bed, water space and fish within the EEZ.
What action will this provoke from Putin? We've already seen how he responds to enforce Russian interests in the most spirited and martial manner possible as he clearly demonstrated in Crimea and then in western Ukraine where Russian forces still engage in daily war with the elected government of Ukraine. We can see it in the Russian treatment of the Balkans and in their ongoing destabilizing efforts in the middle east and their continued support and bolstering of Iranian nuclear ambitions and weapon systems and technology.
I wouldn't ask them to tell anyone but it would be of some comfort to know what our deployed tripwire will do in the event of a Russian incursion (partisans, revolutionaries, Irredentist Popular Front for the Liberation of ethnic Russian Baltic SSRs), etc. It's only crazy if there is no plan that encompasses and deals with any and every response it calls forth from Russia.
What are the odds this White House has a plan? Well, they've been studying the safety of another oil pipeline from Canada now for almost 7 years without a plan to move forward. They announced that Guantanamo would be shut down within a year of them taking office over 6 years ago and yet it is still stuffed with muslim terrorists and fanatics. They were going to come up with a plan to deal with pushing a surge into Afghanistan but it took them over 18 months to go with the plan George Bush left them. They don't have a very good track record for being fast on their diplomatic feet. (Both left of course)
The President announced last week that he still has no plan to deal with ISIS/ISIL. We've been aware of the threat they pose for years and that moron still has no plan for dealing with them. The situation in Ukraine has been a shooting war for over a year and the only answer the President and the National Security Staff have come up with for that is to send Samantha Power to Ukraine to taunt Putin and deliver a nyaah nyaah speech of defiance that she and the United States are in no way prepared to back up.
One can actually hear our former friends spinning in their foreign graves or prison cells as they listen to the most faithless and feckless ally of the 20th and 21st Centuries deliver blood curdling threats like nyaah nyaah to the enemies of western civilization. Poor Reza Pahlavi, Qadafi, Mubarek and of course, Nyugen Van Thieu must be up to 85,000rpm at this point.
It's kind of illuminating how long the New York Times has been eclipsed as a serious source of news and information. If you do go to the Thieu link you can see this at the bottom of the page:
It's interesting to wonder when the United States and Europe conducted the last realistic Return of Forces to Germany (REFORGER) Exercise. How many U.S. Army M1 tanks are left on the Continent? How many fighter wings are left? How many artillery battalions remain on Europe's plain?
Do you ever wonder if the inheritors of that nasty bit of tactics known as blitzkrieg still follow the model and have well organized and equipped Shock Armies standing by for a Channel Dash? Will they signal their intentions when they turn off western Europe's gas supply in December or would that just be seen as a Démarche? I suppose any actual invasion will be countered with a Protest Note lodged at the UN by our Ambassador to the UN. It won't be Power since I'm sure she'll have seen the handwriting on the wall and resigned to spend more time with her family the day before the Soviet Armies take Antwerp and months before the light worker comes up with a response plan.
I ask you to look at the link to monster namer Samantha Power and ask yourself just one question. When did she ever spend any effort at all in advancing the interests of the United States of America?

Correction: October 2, 2001, Tuesday A front-page headline yesterday on the obituary of Nguyen Van Thieu, former president of South Vietnam, misstated his place in the sequence before that country fell to the North Vietnamese in 1975. He served almost until the end, but the last president was Gen. Duong Van Minh. The obituary also referred incorrectly at one point to the year of the coup he helped organize against President Ngo Dinh Diem. It was 1963, not 1965.No doubt the newspaper of record used source material from earlier reporting at the paper of record in misremembering who the last President of South Vietnam was and when he killed Diem.
It's interesting to wonder when the United States and Europe conducted the last realistic Return of Forces to Germany (REFORGER) Exercise. How many U.S. Army M1 tanks are left on the Continent? How many fighter wings are left? How many artillery battalions remain on Europe's plain?

She was a senior adviser to Senator Barack Obama until March 2008, when she resigned from his presidential campaign after apologizing for referring to then-Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as "a monster".
Power joined the Obama State Department transition team in late November 2008, and was named Special Assistant to President Obama and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights on the National Security Council—responsible for running the Office of Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights—positions that she held from January 2009 to March 2013. In April 2012, Obama chose her to chair a newly formed Atrocities Prevention Board. During her time in office, Power's office focused on such issues as the reform of the UN; the promotion of women's rights and LGBT rights; the promotion of religious freedom and the protection of religious minorities; the protection of refugees; the campaign against human trafficking; and the promotion of human rights and democracy, including in the Middle East and North Africa, Sudan, and Burma. She is considered to be a key figure within the Obama administration in persuading the president to intervene militarily in Libya. With an ally like that, what could go wrong? Does the Montreux Convention ring any bells?

A MODEST PROPOSAL
The heart of the intolerance of muslims living in the West and elsewhere has to do with who funded the madrassas that trained all these western hating clerics running wild all over the world. Most of their funding came from Saudi Arabia and arabians living there and the rest came from the Emirates. One way to demonstrate universal disapproval of this sort of behavior would be to seize all their assets located in the West overnight. All their villas in Capri and the cote d'Azure gone overnight along with all their investments and money held by banks in the West.
Think of the trillions of dollars that could be squeezed out of the islamic supporters of terrorism and jihadism in the West! Who keeps sending money to boko haram to buy guns and ammunition? Who keeps sending money to the Taliban to buy guns and ammunition? Who keeps sending money to the families of suicide bombers in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria?
Don't think it can happen? Look at who seized/nationalized all Western assets throughout North Africa and the Middle East.

VERY SMALL ON THE INSIDE
I stood on the rooftop of my apartment building in San Diego watching the fireworks over the bay on 4 July. All of us were up there. It was a while ago. OK, rather a long while ago while Desert Shield was unfolding. I accepted an offer to crew a boat sailing to Cabo San Lucas. It was a thousand miles under sail. We mostly sailed 200 miles offshore.
It was downwind. We moved at the speed of the wind. Kettenburg 40's are very slow down wind.

ADVICE TO A SAUDI KING
Fire your new Minister of Defense and your Minister of the Interior.
I was just listening to National Public Radio and the wonk spokesman for our government said that firing Prince Bandar was the best thing you could have done and replacing him with a man who was seeking to turn Saudi intelligence into a professional organization was long overdue and that if there was any man who could help straighten out your ridiculous policies with regard to Syria it was your Minister of the Interior. That means just one thing considering American government policies with regard to long-standing rulers in the Middle East;
You are a dead man walking and so is every member of the house of Saud.
I'd say good riddance, which is probably what our Foreign Policy wonks, State Department officials and Department of Defense have said since we started killing off all the old rulers of the failed states of the Middle East, but losing people like you only makes things ineffably worse in the Middle East and for America. None of us like you. It goes beyond dislike. We recognize you as serious enemies of ours but I see who inevitably comes after men like you, when finally toppled, as infinitely worse enemies of the West.
Shoot your Minister of Defense and Minister of Interior. Don't exile them.
On the gripping hand, I'm not going to miss you if they hang you upside down from a lamp post in Taif or Riyadh. I'm not really one of the cookie pushers or fools in the NSC who discriminates between pure evil and true evil. As people in the West watch the evil people they now perceive as moderate muslim leaders fall to real pure evil, they'll reconsider some long standing policies about compromising with evil.
America doesn't need you anymore and this government couldn't care less about European or Japanese needs and after watching both of them shut down their nuclear plants, I'm pretty sure they're about to be pruned back too.

AH IS IT ONLY ME
Given this administration, and that the enemy has gained control of Haditha dam, can't you just see the administration response? It probably looks something like this.
"Let's take away the threat and blow the dam ourselves." I'm not sure if that was Hillary, Donilon, Jones or Brennan talking. They all have the same point of view. I'm sure it occurred to all of them.

ENDLESS WAR AS HEADLINES
The news from Nineveh and Babylon isn't so good these days.
The news from the last light of civilization in the Middle East is even less good. I can skip lightly over the news that the enemies of the race have acquired the weapons of mass destruction that everybody now swears blind Saddam didn't have, but the news at the Jerusalem Post is a scroll of rocket attacks, one after another, every day, around the clock from people and territories that have shown nothing but contempt for all the care and aid lavished on them by the West.
I think that even the Israelis are finally beginning to crack under the strain of endless attack. It sounds like they have taken the gloves off officially. It looks like some are fed up with the endless murder.
60 years of war does interesting things to the psyche. We have all of history to look at. I sort of remember a quote from last week about how wars never last more than 30 years. To paraphrase, after 30 years of war we have killed the first and next generation interested in perpetuating war. Something seems to have gone amiss in the valley of the Jordan River. Like the Vale of Kashmir, there is such concentrated hate it perpetuates itself long after reason has fled.
The last major report by U.N. inspectors on the status of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program was released about a year after the experts left in March 2003. It states that Bunker 13 contained 2,500 sarin-filled 122-mm chemical rockets produced and filled before 1991, and about 180 tons of sodium cyanide, "a very toxic chemical and a precursor for the warfare agent tabun."
The U.N. said the bunker was bombed during the first Gulf War in February 1991, which routed Iraq from Kuwait, and the rockets were "partially destroyed or damaged."
It said the sarin munitions were "of poor quality" and "would largely be degraded after years of storage under the conditions existing there." It said the tabun-filled containers were all treated with decontamination solution and likely no longer contain any agent, but "the residue of this decontamination would contain cyanides, which would still be a hazard."
According to the report, Bunker 41 contained 2,000 empty 155-mm artillery shells contaminated with the chemical warfare agent mustard, 605 one-ton mustard containers with residues, and heavily contaminated construction material. It said the shells could contain mustard residues which can't be used for chemical warfare but "remain highly toxic."Those were evidently the WMD that Saddam 'never had.'

NOBODY SAW THIS COMING
The Russians express contempt for the United States and ban the US from the International Space Station. They also banned the sale of any more rocket engines to the US where Americans don't know how to actually make rocket engines anymore, or something like that.
Thanks Obama.
Thanks Obama.

A DEFIANT BUNCH
Here is a story that we like very much even if the bit about deliberately running aground runs contrary to accepted practice. Sometimes a stranded boat or a fiery boat is just the thing to show the requisite determination. I got the steer from our colleagues at gcaptain, where it has been an eventful week. Here is the link from the bigstory.
The Philippines are taking on the Chinese in the South China Sea. There's a reason this ship of theirs looks like hell. You should take a minute to read the story. It's gratifying to see at least one country that plays the game of kings with panache and daring...even if it is with a ratty old tank landing ship.

FASCISTS YOU CAN RELY ON
Dateline:
Heart of the Dark Realm
It will surely come as no surprise that the EU dictator (unelected) has denounced the referendum of the people of Crimea in the strongest possible terms and has vowed to oppose it to the last drop of American blood if that's what it takes to restore non-democracy to the Crimean Peninsula. France and England are saddling their horses and preparing for Round Two of the Crimean War.
Europe needs to be very careful how they step into irredentism. Bravely taking the opportunity to poke Russia in the eye for a perfectly normal and acceptable coup-de-main over Russian territory is one of the more irredeemably stupid behaviors we have come to expect from Europeans. Every single inch of Europe is contested. That's why they perfected ethnic cleansing.
The herd of Europe should have quietly lined up before Putin and asked him nicely to not be blatant about exercising Russia's preeminent authority in Crimea. All things considered, Putin did a masterful job of allowing the people united to speak for themselves. He was helped in this matter by the nasty bit of extermination carried out in the last century which saw to it that the native people living in the area were all appropriately rewarded for zealous exercise of enlightened self-interest. I cannot recall who said that we should all fight together or surely we shall all hang together. Wars have consequences and letting the Bolsheviks win because you couldn't be bothered to oppose them? Big mistake.
There is another warm water Russian port in Europe although I think I am using a most liberal interpretation of the word warm in describing the Baltic Sea. In this purely Russian Port in the former Kingdom of Prussia, there are almost no irredentists because that would have reflected poorly on the NKVD. Those guys were pretty thorough.
The right of self-determination is not new for our friends in Europe. They simply persist in not believing in it until someone makes them. I look forward today to seeing the results of the freedom referendums in Venice, Spain, Gibraltar, and later on, in Scotland.
It will be interesting to watch the establishment of the new Hanseatic League and its predestined struggle with the creaking State regimes who will have to prove a lot more nimble or more Russian to cope with the new Robber Knights. Still, Progress!

WON'T STOP DIGGING
I suppose that just as there must have been millions who sided with Eliot Ness, so too must there be people who side with this vindictive and vicious lawyer. Assuming that this woman who was stripped naked by the law in New York had done all the things the prosecutor charged her with, how much is it worth to society to continue to attempt to prosecute her for doing it?
The link leads to the story at the Times of India and the comments are what make it worth noting. Side with or against her, nobody can see what net positive value accrues to the United States by continuing this charade. The fact that this prosecutor wants to make this woman suffer more at the hands of US justice than any terrorist who ever attacked our diplomats overseas, is telling the world more about us than Operation Enduring Freedom did.
It is fine to bleat about upholding the law but we have bigger fish to fry than a woman who might have underpaid her maid in the eyes of a ridiculous law that is right up there with the 18th Amendment. If you feel the need to prosecute somebody, there's always one of our own government officials... It clearly demonstrates that the law has nothing else to do in New York except relentlessly go after a woman who lied, and frankly, that's just unAmerican.

ECONOMIC WARFARE IS WARFARE
The problem I have long had with people who propose that we should wage economic warfare against countries that we are not altogether happy with, is that it is a form of warfare. I know, you'd never guess that from the title but there it is. It really shouldn't be a surprise when Russia retaliates in kind. The thing about war that escapes politicians is that once you embark on a course of war, it escapes. It consumes and grows and gets out of control. One really shouldn't allow an idiot to talk about imposing economic sanctions on a foreign country unless that idiot is referring to some banana republic.
Russia is not any kind of banana republic. John Kerry Won't You Please Come Home.*
*They made a movie with a title just like this, but different.

LEADING TO TROUBLE CAUSES TROUBLE
:UPDATE:
The navy revealed that the smaller ship shown below momentarily fetched up on the rocks during this little protective sojourn. In terms of "providing security" it was kind of like the President's advanced security detail of Secret Service agents ending up fired for consorting with members of the opposite sex while not on duty. The Navy has inarticulately fired the ship's Commanding Officer because, "The investigation hasn’t turned up any egregious mistakes by Volpe," said Navy spokeswoman. "So far Volpe is the only person implicated."
Gads! It just makes you want to run down to the nearest recruiting station and sign up doesn't it?
----------------------------------------------
One of the articles that caught my eye this morning was from the world famous Navy Times. I admire the Times for its ability to choke on every real news story and inflate, conflate and mistake everything else.
Two navy warships have entered the Black Sea to assist the Russians with Olympic security. Here they are:
These will be a comfort to Americans in Russia should something go awry in Sochi. One is stuffed with senior officers and very little else and has no other purpose but to move officers around. The other is an escort class ship to see that little or no harm comes to the first ship. As you can see from the article, they are there to offer "security assistance." This is becoming a joke isn't it? Whenever our government or State Department speak you can feel their tongue probing your pocket, leaving a trail of slime behind and you know they are being dishonest and deceitful.

THE DESCENT OF MR. X
If we spent $200,000 per year over 8 years to educate the nation's very smartest and most connected young minds and trained them in all the arcane mysteries of international relations and foreign affairs, and then admitted them to the Foreign Service, how did we end up with all the donkeys in the State Department? You really cannot point to a single accomplishment performed by the gruesome morons at State that couldn't have been achieved by a highly motivated 5 year old with a hammer.
They didn't learn anything from the study of history. They failed to learn anything about elementary psychology and negotiation. They don't understand the first thing about ethical standards and the importance of even just appearing to be men of their word. They don't actually know anything beyond what they've read in the New York Times or the Village Voice and they self-select on a scale not seen since the ancient Egyptian royal family.
99 out of a hundred, if called into a room with a globe and asked to point to the country on it that they represent, wouldn't get it right. When you wonder where we get Congresscritters who think illegal aliens have rights that trump yours, now you know. They got the same double bolus of stupid. It must be in the water and since those cretins only drink Evian, I blame the French.

BARRY RUBIN
Barry Rubin stepped into the clearing at the end of the path after a long illness. I don't suppose many people heard of him but he came to my attention when I was taking an Arabic class at university while waiting to head overseas to join my first ship which was permanently home-ported in Bahrain. The professor and one of my fellow students suggested reading Barry Rubin's book, Paved With Good Intentions, which detailed the long and sadly unillustrious history of U.S. diplomacy and warfare in Iran.
He was a prolific writer who wrote a number of books about the region. Paved With Good Intentions examined the role of the U.S. in creating the Shah and ultimately in creating and nurturing the forces that tore his regime apart and threw the country into the hands of muslim extremists where it remains today. It was an interesting perspective for a young man headed to what we were calling the Arabian Gulf at the height of the Iran-Iraq War and the Tanker War. He definitely made an impression.
