One of the things you learn right away in a canoe is that when you're in front paddling you cannot tell what is happening behind you. Why, that person supposedly paddling behind you might be goofing off the whole way!
So, an important tip for those who are leading the way up river, check behind you often to make sure you're not the only one making a positive contribution to net progress.
The best way not to lie is to mumble inaudibly. Mmmmmbsmmlssmlmm. But! We have a picture of our third water adventure on the river with those in photographic evidence clearly seen to be wearing the proper gear for the boat and conditions. So there's that. Other's may leap to presume that this is how we float. Always. We are going to encourage their belief if ever questioned about it and point to this picture. Other pictures? What other pictures?
It was our first canoe adventure. She wanted to go so much that she didn't even notice that it was raining. The river is the Potomac and just upstream and barely in view is the Chain Bridge.
It's fun to watch though as they burn through it. We walk together and she's a mile in front and racing along out of sight until I come around the corner and find her "resting." It's like turning off the light. :)

It's ok to be the slacker, Curtis, kids her age have all the energy--people our age are more like Giant three-toed Sloths by comparison..
