OUT OF THE DARK

I sailed the Pacific and Indian Oceans a lot. I flew over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans more times than I can recall. I saw first hand how large the world is and that's down near the bottom of the atmosphere and along the top few yards of the seas. It's a very big place and it's all an enormous heat sink that our piddly efforts will not trouble at all. That is largely why I never believed in the global warming hysteria whipped into life by Al Gore and the Climategate scammers.

I stopped by Watts Up With That that tonight and found an interesting essay that was linked on the site. It was written by a warmist who looked at and examined all the facts without flailing his arms and legs about, jamming his fingers in his ears and screaming witlessly for hours. You might find it interesting. He has now seen the light.

THE ONE-MINUTE CLIMATE SURVEY
1 Weather is not climate. There are no studies showing a conclusive link between global warming and increased frequency or intensity of storms, droughts, floods, cold or heat waves.
2 Natural variation in weather and climate is tremendous. Most of what people call “global warming” is natural.
3 There is tremendous uncertainty as to how the climate really works. Climate models are not yet skillful; predictions are unresolved.
4 New research shows that fluctuations in energy from the sun correlate very strongly with changes in earth’s temperature, at both long and short time scales.
5 CO2 has very little to do with it. All the decarbonization we can do isn’t going to change the climate much.
6 There is no such thing as “carbon pollution.” Carbon dioxide is coming out of your nose right now; it is not a poisonous gas. CO2 concentrations in previous eras have been many times higher than they are today.
7 Sea level will probably continue to rise, naturally and slowly. Researchers have found no link between CO2 and sea level.
8 The Arctic experiences natural variation as well, with some years warmer earlier than others. Polar bear numbers are up, not down. They have more to do with hunting permits than CO2*.
9 No one has shown any damage to reef or marine systems. Additional man-made CO2 will not likely harm oceans, reef systems, or marine life. Fish are mostly threatened by people who eat them.
10 The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and others are pursuing a political agenda and a PR campaign, not scientific inquiry. There’s a tremendous amount of trickery going on under the surface*.
It's nothing really new, but he found his way into the light of reason just from examining the facts. As all facts unite to demonstrate, the arguments in favor of man-made climate change are nothing but pathetic stories told to frighten the stupid into parting with their wealth and freedom. The essay is well worth reading.

Something else to keep in mind. The people who want to steal the world's wealth to fight an enemy only they can fight are also fighting to keep billions of people in the darkness. That's not right.

MELLOWING THE HARSH

While perusing Watts Up With That I got to wondering how many other blowhards had predicted the irreversible tragic end of life on earth if global warming wasn't halted by 2012. I realize we're all now doomed to a horrible grisly death but it looks like any number of apparatchiks have been proven to be nothing but opportunist alarmists, liars and data fiddlers. You know the anti-free speech folks always cite the 'crime' of shouting Fire! in a crowded theater as behavior that must be punished with jail. How about we do the same to the global warmists who keep shouting Fire! and demanding a handout for pointing out the untreatable, intractable, irreversible tragedy of climate.

A GAS BAG GETS BLOWN AWAY

There is an interesting review of Steyn's latest book posted at wattsupwiththat. I highly recommend hitting the link and reading the entire review. I found it amusing but disturbing that Mann's friend decided to write his own review even though the book hasn't shipped yet and I doubt Steyn or his publisher would send him an advance copy.

This is the final nail through the coffin lid of the Global Warming Scam and it's little sidecar of deceit. Al Gore made it a war on warming but I think we have all seen how the failure to win that war lead to the war on climate change. It looks like a war nobody can win because whatever kind of weather we experience in the future the fools and morons will rush to shriek, "Climate Change!!!!" and demand our billions of dollars to "fight it."

Anyway, if you enjoy a rousing debunking of a myth manufactured out of pseudo-science, lies and deceit, you won't find better.

I RARELY DO THIS BUT THE SNARK IS POWERFUL TODAY

I suppose the thing I like best about the instapundit is the way he encapsulates the news and can cross the stern of the enemy and rake them with broadside fire with such utter ease. Navy captains had to work very hard to accomplish that feat and he does it every single day.

RESPONSE TO CONGRESSIONAL SCUMBAG

It gives me pleasure to read this man's response to the attack on him by a congressional scumbag.

In recent weeks I have been the target of attacks in the press by various radical environmental and politically motivated groups. This effort should be seen for what it is: a shameless attempt to silence my scientific research and writings, and to make an example out of me as a warning to any other researcher who may dare question in the slightest their fervently held orthodoxy of anthropogenic global warming.

I am saddened and appalled by this effort, not only because of the personal hurt it causes me and my family and friends, but also because of the damage it does to the integrity of the scientific process. I am willing to debate the substance of my research and competing views of climate change with anyone, anytime, anywhere. It is a shame that those who disagree with me resolutely decline all public debate and stoop instead to underhanded and unscientific ad hominem tactics.

Let me be clear. I have never been motivated by financial gain to write any scientific paper, nor have I ever hidden grants or any other alleged conflict of interest. I have been a solar and stellar physicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics for a quarter of a century, during which time I have published numerous peer-reviewed, scholarly articles. The fact that my research has been supported in part by donations to the Smithsonian Institution from many sources, including some energy producers, has long been a matter of public record. In submitting my academic writings I have always complied with what I understood to be disclosure practices in my field generally, consistent with the level of disclosure made by many of my Smithsonian colleagues.

If the standards for disclosure are to change, then let them change evenly. If a journal that has peer-reviewed and published my work concludes that additional disclosures are appropriate, I am happy to comply. I would ask only that other authors-on all sides of the debate-are also required to make similar disclosures. And I call on the media outlets that have so quickly repeated my attackers’ accusations to similarly look into the motivations of and disclosures that may or may not have been made by their preferred, IPCC-linked scientists.

I regret deeply that the attacks on me now appear to have spilled over onto other scientists who have dared to question the degree to which human activities might be causing dangerous global warming, a topic that ought rightly be the subject of rigorous open debate, not personal attack. I similarly regret the terrible message this pillorying sends young researchers about the costs of questioning widely accepted “truths.”

Finally, I thank all my many colleagues and friends who have bravely objected to this smear campaign on my behalf and I challenge all parties involved to focus on real scientific issues for the betterment of humanity.

UNAMERICAN

As I read this article about deliberate mass murderers I was struck by an odd UnAmerican thought. Oh sure, it's just me that thinks such a thing could never be done here in the United States by agents of the United States who acted lawfully when they seize cars, homes, yachts, etc because there is the tiniest bit of drug residue in some misbehaving youth. No no.
In addition to ordering the demolition of the homes of the terrorists who carried out Tuesday's attack, he also gave orders to move forward with the demolition of the homes of terrorists who carried out recent attacks.
What do you think would happen if, instead of mobilizing the national guard for the violence we all expect when St. Louis's lame ass grand jury announces its decision....right about the time the State Department will pronounce their six year studied opinion on the pipeline from Canada, if the power that masquerades as our government simply announced that they would demolish the homes of the terrorists who plan to loot, fire bomb and frenzy after the grand jury and DA decide to finally show us their cards?

I can kind of see it now. Of course, when the cops did that whole BURN DOWN HIS HOUSE, they probably knew that he was renting the house and the actual home owner had absolutely nothing to do with the crimes and bombs and such.

I can totally grasp the idea of going to the killer's parents and bitch slapping the crap out of them for raising a murdering scumbag. I can even support burning down their home....if they own it and it isn't rented or mostly owned by some bank through a 30 year mortgage.

It  is winter here in MetroParkCentralis and the heat isn't working and it is likely that the tiny little amount of the Milk of Human Kindness that in me remains, has frozen

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE HOLE IN THE OZONE

Remember the hole in the ozone that was going to KILLLLL US ALLLL?

Can you all look under the rugs, sofa cushions and your aunt Edna to see what became of it? It sure sounded scary at the time.

GET OFF MY BEACH

I didn't buy all this new beachfront land in New Mexico just so some jackass could come along and try to stop the tide from coming in and raising all boats and spoiling my retirement plans. I figure a couple more years of Global Warming and I'll be enjoying this view of my backyard. So, if you don't mind, please leave off messing with the tides in my name. After a miserable day like today, I plan to enjoy some global warming.

I never really liked Norfolk or the Tidewater Region anyway.

I CALLED SPRING

It wasn't much. We went out to the farm this weekend to visit with relatives and the alpacas, llamas, camel, goats, ducks, chickens, cats and bees and it snowed. We drove home to find the snow almost 4 inches deep. That is just wrong so I called Spring and it came.

Not only did I get blue sky for the first time in 5 months, our Man of Winter (plow guy) came today and pulled his marker stakes out of the driveway. He will not be back to plow until next winter. It's official now. Spring has finally arrived.

THE RELENTLESS CRUELTY OF GLOBAL WARMING

They didn't come out and use the scare words but the spin on this news just cries out for an appeal to stop the warming! CBS news Chicago reports:
Record amounts of ice coating the lake is to blame, keeping the birds from their only source of food.
“It just seems like they literally can’t find enough food and are starving,” said Engel.
The dozens found dead so far are likely just the tip of it.
“This is, at least as far as I know, the first time I’ve heard of anything like this,” said Engel.
Nobody is going to believe that it freezes in the Windy City

SURVIVING THE ICE

First, grow a beard.

Second, stay off the ice.

Three, stay in bed.

Well, I'm sure you'll think of something if the need ever presents itself.

SIC TRANSIT GLORIA SCIENTIA

It happened one day over a year ago when a world famous charlatan accused several of his tormenters of defaming and libeling him. This victim of verbal bullies filed a law suit against three of the parties he felt most damaged by and went to court. They countered with lawyers who sought to challenge the basis of the law suit instead of take it to the jury and seek a decision. Two of the defendants probably wanted more than anything for the law suit to go away. The third defendant had something far nobler in mind and it took the full stupidity of the legal profession and the judge in the case to set him free from the timid warriors who decline to fight even when challenged.

The accuser is a man of rank fame for he works at the same institution of higher learning that was also the workplace and institution of higher learning of one of the more athletic child molesters of the 21st century. They were both employees of the Pennsylvania State University. They were both investigated by the peerless investigators of the Pennsylvania State University and both men were found completely above board with nary a scratch upon the escutcheon of their pride and honor. One of these two went on to be convicted of child abuse and was sentenced to 4 million years in prison. The other is still a professor at my alma mater.

The law suit he filed claimed that he was not a vile torturer and manipulator of data used to craft his global warming charade in the form of a hockey stick. There were some other things he objected to but those were tossed out by the new judge or redacted by his own legal team. The publisher parties to the law suit appeared most desirous of a settlement that saw the suit vanish. One party, as I said, wants to bring his ship alongside Mann's, sweep the decks with grape shot and cannister, board it and put everybody left alive to the sword before burning it to the waterline.

The good news is that this is what will happen because that man is now preparing to go to trial with no more waffling about getting the law suit dismissed on any technicalities. It's lawfare you want and it's a lawfare you'll get he declares and promptly announces that he is prepared to move to the discovery phase of the trial and get at the data Mann claims was carefully nurtured and gently raised and not tortured at all. The problem as I see it though is related here at Forbes.com.
Upon careful investigation, McIntyre and McKitrick discovered fundamental statistical method errors so profound that even random numbers fed into Mann’s program would produce a hockey stick curve. That wasn’t all. The Medieval Warm Period which occurred about one thousand years ago and the Little Ice Age (not a true Ice Age) between about 1300-1850 somehow turned up missing.
And as for those Yamal tree samples, they came from only 12 specimens of 252 in the data set… while a larger data set of 34 trees from the same vicinity that weren’t used showed no dramatic recent warming, but warmer temperatures in those Middle Ages.
Scientific critics have also raised another looming question. Since Mann’s 1,000-year-long graph was cobbled together using various proxy data derived from ice cores, tree rings and written records of growing season dates up until 1961 where it then switched to using  surface (ground station) temperature data, then why change in 1961?   Some theorize that maybe it’s because that’s when other tree ring proxy data calculations by Keith Briffa at the East Anglia University Climate Research Unit (CRU) began going the other way in a steady temperature decline.
For all that Al Gore swears he created global warming and thus proves the science that is in it, I see the facts, read the science, note the telltale absence again and again from the various researchers who uniformly fail to produce the actual data used to derive any of the models they claim predict global warming and then note that not one single global climate model predicted the current 17 year absence of warming. I get angry when I hear my position called one of denial.

The people that have pushed global warming for the last 30 years are of the same ilk that pushed eugenics, socialism, communism, phrenology, and lobotomy. There was even a Nobel Prize awarded in 1949 to a Portuguese man who pioneered the idea of sticking ice picks into a patient's brain in order to make it better. Science!

Real science. Repeatable, verifiable science. Reputable science. Reputations matter because with one shiny enough you can convince the simple minded that what you're doing in shipping off millions of people to death camps, gulags, and killing fields, is all done in the name of science. You remember that right? All those guys had science on their side. They said so. Loudly. Repeatedly.*

Making idiots believe is not science. That's religion.

*Science and lobotomy: The USSR officially banned the procedure in 1950[133] on the initiative of Gilyarovsky.[134]  Doctors in the Soviet Union concluded that the procedure was "contrary to the principles of humanity" and "'through lobotomy' an insane person is changed into an idiot."[135] [wikipedia]

NOBODY SAW A DROUGHT COMING UNDER A CLEAR BLUE SKY

Jerry Brown was governor of California in the 1970s during the last major drought. He encouraged people to conserve water with some ill chosen words which were as easily turned against him as George Bush's words, "read my lips."

Moonbeams opponents made campaign buttons to reflect their feelings about the man who opposed constructing any damns, any reservoirs and any freeways in the Golden State. The governor felt that if he didn't build them, nobody else could come and live in California. Because of this prescient and scientific attitude, California has 38 million people in a state that back when he was governor last time had a population of only 20 million. It has exactly the same water infrastructure now as it had then. The only reason California has survived these many years is because the courts got involved and stole the water from the farmers in order to "save" the delta smelt and incidentally, San Francisco and the other cities in the Bay Area.

Jerry's problem though is that having stolen the water first from the farmers he is now going to be forced to steal it from the cities and if he still thinks it's the 70s and reacts to save water as he did then, then with the 18 million more people he has using it every day, he is going to fail miserably.

Progressives and liberals, so used to stealing other people's stuff, firmly believe that there is always more stuff to steal.

And, just as they can run out of other people's money, so too can they run out of water.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

A health update from the INS-finest news service in the isles.

Scientist reveals deeply held NASA secret research about staying healthy at home. In this article at health.com the Scientist reveals the top 5 plants for home health. This may constitute a winter survival alert. If you don't have a plant in your home, get one!

Fresh Air

By Elizabeth Roehrig
Chemicals from building materials, furniture, and even air fresheners can make indoor air toxic, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. But just getting some greenery can help, says B.C. Wolverton, PhD, a former NASA research scientist and the author of How to Grow Fresh Air.

“Houseplants give off oxygen and help remove chemicals like formaldehyde, a common indoor vapor that can cause respiratory and neurological problems, as well as cancer,” he says. These five great picks may not cure asthma, but they can help you breathe easier.

REAL SCIENCE OF NOTE

One of the areas of study at the Research Institute for Unlawful Knowledge is Global Climate and I like to share some of the real science from time to time. We don't necessarily draw conclusions from the data because we believe that all experiments should be fully repeatable using independent data gathered from realities common to all.

That said, the alchemists of our times have failed to scare me and this is mostly due to the kind of straight stick science used in the article above. I also like the comments with the article. It is sad to see so-called Science magazines (online and in print) eliminating their comments sections and pruning out letters and comments from those termed denialists. Real scientific progress has been measured over the bodies of Luddites and of those captured by the brilliance of a theory that is resoundingly proven to be false years later when subjected to the actual scientific method which goes a hell of a lot further than mere peer review.

Science is repeatable. If it cannot be repeated it really should be relegated to the closet next to Cold Fusion.

In just my lifetime every single study of food and diet that blamed some food product for health issues has been found to be based on fantasy. The "SCIENCE" wasn't there after all. Every one of them was trumpeted from the rooftops and followed in the press as if it was real science. So it is with the CLIMATE. Those with models and those who like models are standing pat on their models even if not one of them can replicate reality. That's an interesting proposition for a scientist to take and it speaks poorly of them that the popular scientific journals and newspapers are so confounded by counterclaims that they have elected to simply turn a blind eye to the disagreeable scientists and their theories.
