THE LAST BASTION

It looks like Barnes and Noble is on the ropes and about to go down.

I wonder where will we buy books now?

google search for book stores
The prospects are no better in metroparkcentralis. B&N is the last brick in the old Maginot book line that once included Walden, Crown and Borders. God help us, we will soon be reduced to the Canadian book buying scheme that sold Perry Rhodan books in every dime store and kiosk in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and styled themselves as purveyors of books. It was only the Minutemen that kept that out of Maine and I won't be at all surprised if it swept Vermont like the H1N1 but died aborning because nobody in Vermont can read.

A very sad state of affairs. I was just in B&N on Saturday where I scored a number of really good books. Browsing the shelves is what I do, tough (if not impossible) to do that online. There's always a poorly written algorithm between you and the things you don't know about.

I think I need to rant on this. (FWIW, in my day Vermonters could read, I was born and raised there. These days, I have a sick suspicion that you're right.)

I think you meant New Hampshire.

We love Montpelier and stay there every year and I like passing through Burlington after taking the ferry over from New York but it's passing through. I think Bernie's whole state is insane but it still has some nice people living there. I couldn't help but notice that my favorite book store in Montpelier closed. It was there for years and then gone. It says bad, no good things about a college town and capital city that it only has one book store and a game store styling itself as a book store. A nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. :)

Nope. Any state this up on the Bill of Rights still knows how to read. Even archaic Constitutional writing.
"The only restrictions in regards to licenses or permits are typically for carrying a concealed gun. New Hampshire is a slight exception to this rule. Like other states with weak gun laws, New Hampshire does not require a permit or license to possess or purchase any sort of firearm. Registration is also not necessary."
I note that the site referred to New Hampshire's weak gun laws. Pssshhaaaw!

Perry Rhodan! That was a staple of mine, as well as Tom Swift, back in 6th grade in Gander, Newfoundland. One spinning rack of paperbacks in the drugstore.

That was all they had except for scores of Barbara Cartland Romance novels. It was a truly terrible time for book readers. :)
