I think there are a lot of police who are getting nervous in the service because this is one of the very rare times that one of them has been held accountable for murdering an innocent person because they can get away with it. I think as we go forward more and more of them will be held to account. That ridiculous and nearly deadly charade of law enforcement when an LA cop ran amok and the rest of the police forces in southern California responded by shooting every pickup truck on the road was a sign that things in police world are out of control.

Legal Experts Warn Amber Guyger Verdict Could Set Dangerous Precedent Of Police Officers Not Being Allowed To Shoot Anyone They Want

DALLAS, TX—Former police officer Amber Guyger was found guilty of murder today. Many are praising the verdict, saying that Guyger deserved the murder sentence for busting into her neighbor's apartment and shooting him.
But some legal experts say this could set a dangerous precedent of police officers not being allowed to shoot anyone they want.
"Imagine an America where a police officer can't break into your home and just shoot you to death---that's not my America," said one Dallas lawyer. "This is really stoking fears all over the country that we will no longer be able to trust our police officers to kick in the wrong door and shoot us in the face."
He shook his head. "Today, justice has been served---and that's a bad omen for any police officer who may want to one day exercise his right to go into your home and shoot you."
Guyger and her legal counsel relied heavily on the "But I was a cop" argument as well as the "I feared for my life" defense, plus a creative use of the "Did I mention I was a cop?" legal precedent. But shockingly, none of these arguments worked, baffling legal experts and causing many to worry about the future of our justice system.
Spokespeople for the justice system assured Americans the decision was a fluke and that it "won't happen again."This is the picture at the 'shooting' link. It makes for terrible reading. 2 people out delivering newspapers had the misfortune to appear in front of police officers far more worried about themselves getting home than giving a rat's ass if innocent civilians get to make it home alive.

Eight Los Angeles police officers who mistakenly opened fire on Los Angeles Times newspaper delivery women thinking they were rogue ex-cop Christopher Dorner in 2013 will not be criminally charged, the L.A. County district attorney’s office announced Wednesday.Those cops should still be in jail for attempted murder.

It's almost not really satire, as you say. Some police agencies are already out of control, many others are sliding that way. If you're a cop, you have allegedly been trained in the use of deadly force, therefore, if you shoot the wrong person, and the investigationshows that you effed up, say hello to your new cellmate, Bubba, he's already in love with you.
If training is deficient, then your superiors get to meet Bubba as they are the ones who effed up.
To quote the fictional admiral, "This is going to get out of control..."

no doubt, you all know the laws that are in the books regarding LEO's using deadly force. when LEO's fire a weapon, they must by law account for every round fired and where the bullet ended up at and what happened to the bullet between then and now. TV shows not withstanding.
when so many rounds are fired so as to make identifying the provenance of each and every bullet all but impossible, "but I'm a cop" comes into play along with the answer to the question "did anyone see you do that?".
now that the "courts" have found LEO's need not step into harm's way to defend you, I predict we will soon have a court ruling stating that the LEO's are not responsible for anything they do while the LEO's think they are in harm's way. Because they are cops.
OTOH, when a LEO uses his/her own moral judgment concerning holding a person wanted by ICE, and is punished for it; all LEO's should ask themselves if they really want to be associated with such an organization. The first moment Law enforcement becomes political, it becomes something corrupt and amoral and any moral person needs to decide whether to walk away or force a change in the rules thru the "courts". As a citizen, I don't wish to employ amoral LEO's at any level. If required to do so, I would push to remove the LEO's ability to use lethal force, on or off the job.
LEO's do not PREVENT crime. only citizens can do that.
As long as I've been alive the police in the United States have been shooting innocents and bystanders with complete immunity and impunity. They are seldom
so much as disciplined for their out of control desire to ventilate whatever 'scares' them. I remember a most egregious case in San Diego where 10 CHP police surrounded a demented man waving a branch at cars from the I-5 median by La Jolla. They all felt compelled to empty their pistols at him until he was really really dead. Everybody in the police agreed they had no choice. I'm really tired of it. Jeesh, the cops at Empire State building killed a man and wounded 9 innocent bystanders when the guy they set out to kill never even raised his hand against them. They just opened fire until they were out of bullets.

so don't take me wrong here. I really want to support LEOs doing a difficult job, but by GOD some of them make it so damn hard to do so.
It is hard these days, but we need to support the good ones.
Whoever came up with the idea that cops are above the law was an idiot. Useful idiots keep perpetuating this. Actions should have consequences.
