THE MARTIAN TEST

I can guarantee that there will be an intelligence test for anybody that wants a trip to Mars on one of Mr. Musk's rocket ships. SpaceX will probably carry out a complete background check on all the candidates too, just to make sure. And here I can hear those wannabees muttering a few choice words but everyone knows that the first English colonies in the New World didn't work out all that well and most of the new colonists died almost immediately and the last thing colonists on a new world in tomorrow want are saboteurs, freeloaders, communists and other socialists. It's not looking good for any Europeans making it to Mars. They'll have to shoot for Venus.

Europe's target destination will be Uranus.

Despite Musk's claims we aren't sending humans to Mars anytime soon. And when we do odds are good they will die....perhaps even before get there. Almost certainly within a year or two of arriving. And as long as those going know and accept this then humanity must at least try.

One of the things that makes me more optimistic is that colonization will proceed IAW SPACEX plans and not so much the madness that is NASA. On that line they will launch a dozen or so of their giant ships to Mars with all kinds of goodness and robots that seem to be more functional and longer lasting every day. They can hopefully build something that will make earthlings a little better off than the people that got into Roanoke and Jamestown.

One of my ancestors arrived in North America aboard the good ship Hercules in 1618, two years before the Mayflower. Don't know how his life was here but the family has prospered. My hopes and prayers are with any Mars colonists.

Sending AI robots to Mars would be a much better idea than people. People need food, water, oxygen, shelter and energy. Very tough to come by on Mars. A robot would need energy...and perhaps minimal shelter at times. Much simpler to do.

The prospect of extreme isolation (a profound loneliness) then assured untimely death would dictate a certain personality best suited to those conditions. On this we agree.

I do not agree with your assessment of which personality type would be most suitable. I think the psychopath would be best.
That personality is 'already there' in their ability to confront hostile psychological conditions. Conditional is if they could be restrained/retrained to not perceive physical violence or psychological manipulation as viable.

But no one will survive that deep loneliness. Even a human with say, neural implant or training (designed to stave off emotions) would be able to withstand that forlorn lack of hope.
That means the mission is already dead before leaving earf.
