As they used to explain to us back in basic navy school, it isn't the initial acquisition cost that hurts, it's the maintenance costs. It would have been somewhat clearer if they used a graphic.

So true. The better looking the model the higher the maintenance costs.
There's an old quote (can't recall who to attribute it to) that women and battleships are similar, because it costs a fortune to keep them both in paint and powder.
That was the line I was trying to remember!
