The best way to forget a painful memory is to forget it. Of course, you first have to bludgeon it to death and then hope nobody notices. You would not believe how the universe tosses you over its shoulder and invites you to remember.
I am blessed/cursed to remember in detail every one of those occasions. In detail. Going back to Junior High. Makes for "interesting" evening contemplations. OTOH: Lessons definitely learnt.
I dare say they went on your permanent record. I'm not much on religion; nothing at all actually, but I prefer grace and that is like a word that lay under ground zero at either Nagasaki or Graceland. You won't find it on this burnt earth.
Just so. There is no more crystal clear bright memory than a smell. One can smell a single thing and be transported back in time in an instant. I'll admit, this might be fading with my generation. Women, teachers, lilac bushes, you could tell where you were just by a single whiff.
I haven't smelled some of the rare locators for some time. I miss them. Just the smallest scent could take me back 50 years in a heartbeat.

I can.
Believe, that is.

Always something there to remind me.
It's more than just a lyric in a song...
yeah, unforgiving. Lethe was a river. You could take a simple swim and forget.....and turn into a fish.
