It will be interesting to see if the Chinese anschluss happens anywhere near as quickly and as thoroughly as the German anschluss. Can the forces of Taiwan stand up against the famously liberal and progressive, not to mention overwhelming power of Red China or will they roll over just as quickly as the Austrians, Afghanis and the Syrians did when their friends and neighbors came knocking at the door?
I've often been wrong in my predictions but I wonder if anyone will even fire a shot if China sends a few cruise ships stuffed with uniformed tourists to Taipei or Keelung and they just walk ashore, form up in ranks and march off to invite the government to step down and bow to the will of Heaven.
Perhaps it's time to reread, The Diamond Age.

In some ways politically the Taiwanese are their own worst enemy. They have the CCP breathing down their neck and they can't even get along sometimes let alone present a unified front to Beijing. If they were smart they would build and deploy nukes with the express purpose of destroying numerous mainland Chinese cities if they are invaded....and NOT keep it a secret. They have the technical skills and know how. They just lack the will. And if you aren't willing to do the needful you don't deserve to survive.
I hate to say it but they are Chinese. They're all Chinese. Chang Kai Shek was merely staving off the inevitable and everyone knew it way back then and certainly when we turfed him out of his seat at the UN and gave it to Mao.
China is every bit as diverse as America, and has been for centuries. Even know the various ethnic subgroups don't get along well. It's only the gloved fist of the CCP that keeps things civil.
Exactly, and it didn't help that the koumintang blasted into Formosa and took it over lock stock and barrel from the occupants without so much as a, 'by your leave.' The thing the world might begin to understand soon is that the only thing that keeps things appearing civil is strong men running things. Without the iron strength at the center the rest of the State quickly flies apart. We can watch it happen in real time in Syria, Libya, Iraq, most of Western Europe and soon in Israel when Netanhahu goes away. See what happened when the core of the USSR faded away?
