THE REALLY SCARY THING

About Mutual Assured Destruction is that nobody believes Putin gives a damn and nobody in the West thinks the ruling elite care about it anymore. They don't live or work in the Soviet targets anymore. I'm actually kind of tired of them.

I don't care either democrats. I'm not going to miss NY NY or DC or San Francisco and yeah, I lived in them all.

If you would like to see where something like 3000 Russian nuclear weapons are targeted, it's available on line. It will give you nightmares as you start to co=-rationalize that you think Putin is a psycho with cancer and nothing to live for but you go for it. After all, you also think man made global warming is real.

The number of nuclear warheads they have changes every now and but they had 5700 the last time I looked and cared. Not a bomb specialist, I hear they degrade over time. Not a nuclear engineer, it's the material.

An enemy really doesn't have to ship them ballistically. They can use UPS.

Even if only 10% of their warheads function as intended that's more than enough to essentially end the USA as a functional/livable place.
Our major hope is that while it's becoming apparent Putin is coming unwrapped the chain of command there would short circuit any orders to launch he may give. There were at least two known instances during the cold war when low to mid level officers prevented Armageddon by NOT following orders and protocol.

I think it was a Tom Clancy novel in which we had a nuclear détente with the Rooskies and it turned out must of their ICBMs were useless junk. Given the state of their standing army when Biden's War started, how much maintenance has been done on the missiles for the past 30 years???? That could be good (they don't work) or bad (they go all over the play willy nilly).
Except for the nukes that the US used in WWII, I believe that nukes will only be used for an ideological reason. The old Soviet Union could have done it with their beliefs' in Marxism. But today, I would like to think that if Putin gives the order, saner people around him will put one in his ear.

In the past I've enjoyed reading comments by both Dan and Matthew W. There are times, however, when I feel that they ascribe too much good will to people like Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, President of Russia: he is a Russian who thinks like a highly intelligent Russian and will do whatever is necessary to protect Russia; don't ever mistake him for a stale marshmallow like our "leader".

About 40 years ago was the bio of Peter the Great. Great man. As I read it it became clear that Russians are not European. The Enlightenment left them in the Dark. They had chattel slavery right up to 1917. The revolution changed almost nothing. The peasants remain just as they were and the elite remain just as they were, with minor add-ons.
But to think,
In 1984 I took the bus from Rota to Cadiz for a day out. Spain at that time had not begun to be a 19th century civil state.

In the summer of '62 my folks requested I act as bear-leader for the son of one of their friends. We drove, slowly, stopping in many aldeas, from Madrid to Torremolinos. My responsiblity ended after he departed for Palma and I spent the next month++ living with a local family, taking buses into the towns along the coast from Malaga to Algeciras. Even as I grew up in a truck-farming community, those two months were a real eye-opener; 19th Century civil state - I think you're being kind.
Might consider the people from St. Petersburg European - maybe - on a good day.

At one time Putin was a clever man.....and a decent poliltician. But age and the vagaries of failing health are calling that into question. Add in the inevitable ego that comes from being 'large and in charge' for so long and it's quite obvious that he's been making decisions lately that aren't always logical or even in Russia's best interest.

No and none from the places which never experienced The Enlightenment. It was the Dutch, the English and some of the Germans plus nobody. I would recommend the books by SM Stirling on this topic. I read them once, won't read them again but how amazing he hit on a Europe that still embraced slavery and a tiny handful of people fought their way into civilization, again.

Which books by SM Stirling?
It has been too long since I enjoyed his work.
Thanks

down the road from me is a retired Titan Missile Squadron near Aurora Reservoir. It's still a targeted area for the russian strategic forces because the russians would never deactivate anything so precious, they think. so why would the USAF?. there is the retired Lowery AFB, former home to the USAF Academy now a redeveloped tax base of some repute and across from my backyard is Buckley AFB, home of much ado with NSA and Space force, CANG and reserves and a russian target for several weapons. of course there are the Rocket Ranch facilities in the foothills, the USAF Reserves manpower center, and so much more to hit.
my present plan for when the whistle starting the great game is blown, is a lawn chair and cooler of ice cold Shiner Bock beer( I do have standards, ya know) on the roof to enjoy the most expensive fireworks show in history, however many microseconds it will take for the X rays of the detonation to make way thru the cloud of ionized nitrogen gas to turn my body into a finely crisped dust cloud critter. no sense in running away, I'd just die tired. there is a plethora of viable targets for air bursts and megaton range ground bursts along the east side of the mid Rocky Mountains regions. one would hope the Chinese have better navigation algorithms for their weapons then the Russians have; I would hate to survive the attack and find out they didn't include any of the major 'blue' cities on the first attack lists. that would just make me bitter.

My mistake, they were the Baroque Series by Neal Stephenson. They featured America Shaftoe and data centers. Kind of current events now as I think about it.
