THE LOCAL

One of the many things I find amazing is how some authors and their books hang on forever with almost no effort at all. Nobody at any school in any state in the USA or at any school anywhere else in the world ever put even one of his books on the reading list for the kids and yet, a hundred years later they are still to be found in every quality used book store in America. I read all of his books by the time I was 12. They were in the back hall at my grandparent's house and many were in our house because we liked Barsoom and Carson of Venus and every other book he wrote.

So you'll find Burroughs where you'll never find Kipling. Which is too bad because Kipling wrote many fine books but most are very hard to find. On the other hand, I've stayed in two different B&Bs in different states which had all of his books lined up on the fire place mantle in the room. I really do, one day, intend to read, The Light that Failed.

I think they were first editions but they were treated as children's reading material and many of them were in my great grandfather's shed down by the barn and while we read them there I think they were equally attractive to the mice. I have a very sad looking Princess of Mars sitting here beside me. I remember when she was still as fresh as a daisy about 55 years and 24 moves ago.
