It looks like a spiral sometimes but I don't think that's how it really works. History is way messier than that.
According to the lore, Nelson threw another signal in the air to his captains during the Battle of Trafalgar.
"In case signals can neither be seen nor perfectly understood, no captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy."
He suspected that all of his captains were intelligent naval officers stuffed with all of the virtues decades of waging naval war against France had to offer them and content that they all recognized the enemy and knew what to do once they got alongside.
Wouldn't it be nice if Western Civilization shared a similar outlook on dealing with the enemy?
