I run across this video every couple of years and it shows the ridiculous Bailey's Beach Club in Newport, RI which Senior Klansman and Senator Whitehouse belongs to in his spare moments between advocating for the armed overthrow of the United States and giving free killer drugs to everybody under the age of 12. What I like though, is those two little cottages you see in the immediate background behind the beach. Those were where I dropped off the last half dozen newspapers on my paper route back in 1975.
The mansions were both very posh back then and probably even posher these days but they really had nothing to do with the beach. We used to go there all the time and nobody ever bothered to tell us about it being members only. If they had, we simply wouldn't have cared. Our house was directly behind the one with the white chimneys and lay alongside the one with the red chimneys. We shared the driveway.
The beach is one end of Cliff Walk and there was no special markings or anything to keep people out of the beach. The enforcement that may have existed probably simply extended to looking at stickers on the windshields of cars in the parking lot. Obviously, this was not a problem for us.
One of the other houses I lived in in Newport was at the other end of Cliff Walk. Back in the mid 70s and early 80s it was a very nice little coastal town on par with Solana Beach, Del Mar and Encinitas.
