I worked right on the border with Mexico for 8 years and while Tijuana was quiet I knew that underneath was an entirely unknown country that nobody ever talked about. When the headless bodies hanging from bridges became too intrusive in our news, the news always ignored the following bodies ruthlessly and when thousands of women and children vanished on just the TJ border every year nobody ever paid any attention.
Tourists flock to Mexico for some reason and never realize that there is a hidden government and hidden hands that permit them to live and enjoy life and that they can and will take it all away in an instant. That said, this is Mexico's fight and not ours because we dodged a bullet by electing President Trump who put an end to the outright invasion of this country by the Cartels that own and operate everything you see and know in Mexico including the Government, the Police, the Army the Federales, literally everyone is Cartel.
You thought we had ridiculous numbers of asylum seekers before and this is just one of a dozen cartels expressing its unhappiness. Everyone now knows that the cartels and gangs can be beaten but almost no country has the will to undertake the fight. Just one so far. It will cost them as much as our own Civil War cost us and I doubt that they will be interested in paying.

I have read that the only forces the government has that are honest, and willing to strike at the cartels are the Navy and Marines.
That was me, just above.
That country has been a failed state for a long time. Sure, they have a high number of billionaires per capita, but the state is failed.
Since, say the 1980s how many times have they significantly revalued their currency? Millions become pennies overnight. That is but one indice of a failed state. The country has been known for horrid corruption for a very long time, corruption intrinsic of the culture.
Why any American would be in that country is beyond me. So insanely stupid that I opine that they should suffer their ill choice and definately not come back.
Their Marines are absolutely ready and willing. They are not to be trifled with nor to be dismissed.
The problem in the main is two fold. The Marine force has been infiltrated with bad actors and their command structure is compromised.
