BROUGHT TO THIS LOW ESTATE

It was the 28th of July 1540 when the King of England ordered someone to cut off the head of his Chief Minister. Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex, earned this honor from no less a King then old Henry VIII. He had been accused of high treason and heresy so a double damnation and was executed without trial via a simple bill of attainder. It was quite a fall for the Lord Great Chamberlain, Governor of the Isle of Wight, Lord Privy Seal, Master of the Rolls, Principal Secretary, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. The poor headsman probably had to swing a dozen times to get it off.

On this day under dark and rainy skies I cannot help but think that things in England would be far better today if the King was still allowed to chop off the heads of his ministers who failed him in any tiny particular or detail. I'm OK with defenestration but the Russians have been using that method for generations now and it seems a shame to conflate the death of some worthless men with the deaths of some unfortunate souls who failed to keep their peccadilloes secret. One was simply corrupt and the other was merely caught in the act or dispatched for being in the way.

I won't say that things move more smoothly when the Sword of Damocles hangs directly over the heads of men in office who feel they are untouchable and unaccountable but I'd feel a lot better about how things are run if the sword dropped from time to time on the evil ones. Of course, right now, the great unwashed mass steeped in virtue and humility that comes naturally and by the grace of God to liberals and other demons on the left think they have found just the man to drop a sword on.

England's path has been steadily downhill since the Tudors and the power of the throne faded away. Still, there are many wonderful books written about the times that came after and about the faded glory that was the Angevin Empire before the Tudors

A Great Victory
