There was probably a good reason - just not apparent to us.
He used to write that wrestling snakes in a cockpit was better than anything else he could do after he retired from the Navy. I know that he would strongly agree that it was not better than everything else.
There was. It was very windy that day and he wrote about what an awful fate it was to be dragged in a parachute you could not get out of.
