That's a beautiful light. As for the planting... is this a metaphor, of sorts?

We actually climbed to the top of that light last month. We were visiting the attached museum and I planned to climb to the top anyway but then we saw one of the giant lake freighters backing down the river right in front of us and commence a beautiful spin-in-place turn in the harbor before heading through the seawall into Lake Erie.
More a myth than a metaphor, to answer your question. As I understand the progressive left, America never in 300 years did anything good or wholesome and no American ever displayed altruism or enthusiasm for human rights.
I really like Fairport Harbor.
